On March 10th, Archiprix 2026 and BK Talks joined forces and hosted an exhibition talk around the following question: what are the borders of architecture today—and what capacities should remain inside the realm of the designer?
The talk was organized in collaboration with Public Programs of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft. The talk took place in the Oostserre of the Architecture faculty in Delft, overlooking the exhibition. Saskia van Stein (IABR) opened the evening with a word of welcome. Javier Arpa Fernández (curator of BK Public Programs) moderated the conversation. Three Archiprix nominees were invited to pitch their projects: Magdalena Salinas (With Salt it Hurts, With Salt it Heals), Rachelle Pruim (Dancing with the Waterwolf) and Ties Booisma (Statushuis). After the pitches, a panel discussion followed. The panel consisted of the three Archiprix nominees, Klaske Havik (professor at TU Delft), Lieke Jildou de Jong (owner of Landscape Collected; Archiprix jury member), Job Floris (director at MONADNOCK; Archiprix jury member), and Mich Rossiter (ARGUS member; TU Delft graduand).
During the discussion, a range of topics were raised by the panel. The pivotal questions addressed were what are the borders of architecture today—and what capacities should remain inside the realm of the designer?
Do market pressures urge practitioners to seek shelter in the core values of the profession or is this the moment to experiment and redefine the practise? These topics were discussed at the TU Delft from different perspectives and generations (undergraduate, graduate, junior, senior), and from different roles within the disciplines (educator, architect, student, designer, artist). The discussion included questions about artistic freedom, sources of inspiration, the work/life balance in offices, the relation between artistic research and the designed iteration and how to find confidence in one’s own artistic position.
What are the limits, hubris and responsibilities that the architectural disciplines are confronted with? Should the borders of the architecture discipline stretch further into other domains or are there non-negotiable terms that are there to keep them grounded in the field? The discussion was inspiring, yet the answers remained unresolved.
A special thank you to all who participated in the talk.
