Design proposal to remodel Brakke Grond cultural centre in Amsterdam.
Located on the Nes, a street in the historic inner city of Amsterdam, Brakke Grond is an important cultural enclave for Dutch speakers. It provides an international platform for emerging talent in the visual and performing arts from the Netherlands and Flanders.
The following themes were key to my design proposal to remodel Brakke Grond with a floor surface area of 8000 square metres. Continuity as well as discontinuity in the built heritage of the city figured prominently, as did the presence of cultural spaces that facilitate participation. Then there are everyday spaces varying between those with familiar domestic proportions to monumental industrial spaces. Lastly there are fixed, inflexible spaces that can accommodate varied use. These form a permanent backdrop to a constantly changing cultural programme.
