Projected onto Rotterdam Central Station, the hub reacts to physical movements and fluctuations in the flow of information
Sited at Rotterdam Central Station, this hub is intended as a tool for rendering the language of the city intelligible to travellers. The designed structure operates at another level of consciousness, and is a reaction to physical movements and fluctuations in the flow of information. The design consists of two parts. The principal structure is projected onto Rotterdam Central Station. Here an array of reactors provides dynamic information by summarizing the movements and tracks of people and communicating them in the physical environment. The pattern on each floor is a visual representation of the invisible urban network.
The hub, together with the station, creates a free space with a range of possibilities. The space is generated through real-time interaction with other places, with the movement of people feeding the system. This project is an attempt to show clearly that it is not only physical bodies or electronic signals that move about our urban space; that there is another level of communication between structures and urban voids that issues from the natural behaviour of people.
