'Just-in-time living' proposes an alternative mode of dwelling. It is a project that takes account of changing social and cultural habits. This so-called Jit-Life! System begins with a Provider, where members can log in to access a rich mix of facilities and services. The system is tailored to the nodes and wishes of singles, people living alone. Members don't need to buy a computer or TV. The Provider bears the responsibility of accessing these facilities. The funding this frees is deployed to develop an optimum living environment.
My design consists of an infrastructure that is both urban and architectural. This gives a flexible framework which one can vary and change using a special set of instructions. There are also specially developed home units that can be inserted into the infrastructure. These come in a wide array of variants and models. They can be reduced to their most basic form, a place of shelter and privacy, by the outplacement of facilities.
The clients of Jit-Life! System access it using a personal identification unit. This unit is as much an instructor as a task provider and registers use and income (usufruct). Without it the home unit is non-operational and no more than an empty shell.
The structure with the home units is implanted in the existing urban fabric of the Müllerpier in Rotterdam. Here the structure's own facilities are joined by a panoply of highly specialized facilities of the kind found near major city centres.
The specialization assigned to the intervening area of 'public space' thrown up between the Provider and the home units at this particular site on the Müllerpier, is that of R(est) & R(ecreation).
Though the System's building blocks are identical, the subjective approach taken by the individual (the consumer) spawns a wide range of variants. The overall structure acts as a platform that responds to underlying historical layers, function and use, so that each location acquires its own identity. The Müllerpier serves as a springboard to a network of stopping-off places for 'singles'.
Rooted in existing phenomena, in this case the New Economy, Jit-Life! System is a visionary plan for a target group seeking to live along alternative lines. Those taking part are less attached to property and more interested in having a broad array of facilities at their disposal.
