1day24ever - Vione van Leeuwen

1day24ever stands along the waters of the Hudson River on the west side of Manhattan in New York. It is a residential building given over to all forms of dwelling - hostel, hotel, temporary and permanent apartments. As such, this project meets the need to accommodate a large group of people staying in the city for a longer or shorter period. This mix of types infuses the complex with life. 1day24ever is configured to stimulate encounter between the wide diversity of personalities staying there.

My project forms part of a municipal development scheme for the neglected waterfront of Manhattan. This scheme, which combines an unbroken park-like zone with a promenade of live-work-leisure facilities, seeks above all to stitch the city fabric to the water.

It is within this framework that I have designed a residential building on and along the river. I have extended the grid pattern of the existing structure across the water so as to retain a view of the river from the streets. The building's volume adheres to the limitations of the city block, the water, the pier and the road, also taking into account the qualities on site and the planning constraints such as the maximum building height imposed by the City of New York.

The materials have been chosen to accompany the transition from city to water. If you approach the building from the ring road or walk towards it, the impression you get is one of transparency. As the degree of privacy and solar protection can be adjusted individually for each component, the layered facade has a spatial aspect that is constantly changing.
