Aarhus Værksted - Lars Dreessen

This project to recycle a former train depot is intended to galvanize redevelopment of the southern portion of the city of Aarhus in Denmark. An existing complex is to accommodate a film theatre, a film academy and student flats. These new uses are to trigger a movement proceeding southward from the city centre. Central to the design are the three different types of users of this area. There are passers-by who use the area as a link between the inner urban area, the more southerly residential part, the railway station and the port; visitors who exploit the local facilities; and lastly students/residents, the area's most intensive user group.

My design seeks to bring these groups of users into contact with each other. This encounter is important for the interaction and movement it brings to bear. Guiding and informing the users through the design strengthens this confrontational element. Every scale of planning is enlisted in the search for possibilities of encounter between the various users, developed on the basis of parallels with other disciplines. My research included watching film footage by Andrei Tarkovski, David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino who weave the theme of confrontation into their work. In Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, for example, there are three narratives which at first sight seem quite unrelated but as the film proceeds are brought into confrontation and even influence one another.
