The principal aim of this project is to give architectural form to a distribution hub which is to meet the needs of Europe's transshipment capacity in 2030. This new logistics centre is sited in the English Channel above the Channel Tunnel 15 kilometres from Calais. VASSO consists of a train and lorry terminal at the Eurotunnel, docks for ships, aeroplanes and spaceships, a freight transshipment system, a technology park, passenger terminals, offshore systems and facilities for generating clean energy. The combined ground coverage of the complex is 46 million m2. VASSO supports the existing network by separating the furiously growing freight traffic into intercontinental and local flows. The European VASSO prototype is rooted in strictly practical considerations such as efficiency and the capacity necessary to successfully adapt to the European logistics network. At the same time VASSO introduces different forms of clean energy generation (wind, wave, solar) so as to be able to provide both the complex and its surroundings with energy.
