This design projects an urban leisure centre on Jaarbeursplein, the plaza belonging to the Jaarbeurs trade fair complex in Utrecht. In contrast to the plaza's dismal state at present and the none too hopeful plans fostered by the council, this scheme provides a vibrant public urban space at the existing major pedestrian link between Utrecht Central Station and the trade fair grounds. The building consist of a rectangular volume containing a loose scattering of self-sufficient units - a stage for live pop music, a discotheque and a cinema. The counterform between these units presents a varied experiential world with after-hours activities that include a café, a restaurant, a multimedia centre and a foyer. With its frontage following the street-lines, this box-shaped building constitutes a city within the city.
The principal supporting structure largely determines the building's appearance. Its various volumes are hung in large steel lattice girders. Each volume has its own materiality and detailing to strengthen the independence of the activities it contains. The building sports a semi-transparent glass skin with windows placed strategically to give views out of the city. The building's functioning is discernible through the facade as a shadow play, an effect enhanced at night when the lights are on.
