Design method for an architecture of surprise | Jeroen Tacx

My aim in designing out of association and visual representation, inspired by Bernard Tschumi's Manhattan Transcripts, is to attain a richer, more surprising architecture. My design vision is diametrically opposed to that of functionalism, the dogma of the modernists. This last-named perspective is outmoded now that buildings can change function so rapidly in step with social changes. These days form is more able to define content. The method I have followed divides into four stages. First there is the search for fragments of today's society. These fragments are then transformed into personal statements using Photoshop commands. An illogical, alienating image ensues. In the third stage the personal statements are interpreted and transformed into three-dimensional objects and spatial models with the aid of 3-D software. In the fourth and final stage the design method is put to the test. The spatial model is confronted with a programme and a site in Amsterdam. The function is 'distorted' to fit the space.

An aspect essential to the followed method is that the building is made up of individually designed fragments, each evolving from one personal statement. This approach is able to produce a montage of building parts in a spatial sequence of colliding, surprising and unexpected transitions.
