My final-year project gives my perspective on the development potentials of Drachten. This perspective I translated into a model and a strategy for the longer term. The unfurled scenario shows in time and space the possibilities open to this Friesian town. I chose the Drachtstervaart redevelopment project as the concrete site for an experiment, treating the project as a concentration of activities of an inciting nature. It gives new impulses to the town; it puts it under pressure, so to speak.
The conditions for settling in Drachten are enhanced by the town's unique position in the new railway infrastructure linking the western Netherlands with north Germany. It opens up opportunities for developing Drachten further. Local governments and multinationals need representative accommodation. This is why I made the strip the strategic choice for fleshing out an auditorium. This landmark building identifies Drachten as a principal gateway to the Friesian lakes. The high-grade architecture is to serve as a catalyst for future developments. Its sculptural form and mode of programming makes the auditorium not just a building but urban design and landscape as well.
