The Bandwidth of Activity | William Veerbeek

second prize

My design methodology for a radio-astronomical centre in Barcelona seeks to redress the schizophrenic gulf widening between architecture and the increasingly digitally-informed activities of its users. The relationship between building and user is under pressure; the ever greater inroads made by the computer has meant that almost no demands are made these days on architectural space.

In developing a design for the radio-astronomical centre the users themselves are to lay the basic structure for the building's organization in a test phase. Aided by a formal network model, their 'digital behaviour' is interpreted using pattern recognition. The resulting topology then serves as a functional organization structure for the design. While many an office floor is doomed to end its days as an abstract tabula rasa, this design attempts to restore the interaction between architecture and its users.
