This series of 16 'living-volumes' was designed with the aim of researching, admiring, wandering and wondering about architecture. The course commences with three independent rules of play. First, all place-making is done on equal footing: an existing but abstract grid projected onto the centre of Rotterdam functions as a place-generator. This produces sixteen unimagined places, in an alley, on a road, along a dyke, in a roofscape or in the River Maas. Second, there is the brief, a description of the special character of each volume. These characters are derived from an idea about dwelling. The third rule is that each design consists of a volume of 150 m3. This volume brings out the intensity of the character in question. It acts as a constant, so that one can respond with a fixed dimension to the scale of the city.
During the process of designing each volume, an interaction arose between it and the other 15 living-volumes. Defining and redefining, questions and answers, give an edge to the design brief. Ultimately a new hidden layer in the centre of Rotterdam is exposed. In fragments and in time, it makes its presence felt to those who are wandering, admiring, wondering and on the look-out for connections.
