Hemmespheres - Johan Krol

The Hemmes is an archipelago in the river Zaan in Zaanstad, a town slightly north-west of Amsterdam. Hemmespheres seeks to spatially restructure this old abandoned industrial area. By relocating the sheds, making the area accessible and laying on housing, a marina and a hotel, the Hemmes once again has significance for Zaanstad. All the new spatial elements are designed to serve the dwelling aspect as well as the integration of landscape and town. The house-type was developed on the strength of a study I made into the chemistry between dwelling and the situation on site. Transformations and reworkings of this mode of dwelling, and the 'overtuin' – the back garden reached across a road or water, an age-old feature of this region - join forces in this architectural/landscape ensemble.
