Space for religion, route of memory and expectation

At a crossroads in the centre of Tilburg, the dynamic urban processes are marked by flows of people. Within these flows I have made space for Christian worship. Space for religion is conceived of as the organizing of religious experience in everyday life. A route through the city becomes a religious route.

History tells us that the Christian religion has had the temple, the cathedral and the auditorium as its successive spaces of worship. These archetypes and aspects pertaining to them - identity, experience and use - are the stepping-off points for my architectural design. Many different liturgical forms have a place along the route, in the midst of passages from the Scriptures. Here we see a community emerge consisting of those who interpret the passages, observe the rituals and live the space. A route from place to place, from word to word, from meaning to meaning, through the space for religion.
