The Ignoble House - Jeroen van Bekkum

The Ignoble House

This entry combines four projects linked by various guiding themes, with the emphasis on conceptual backgrounds and motifs. The four projects were worked up into a number of designs.

The New Bauhaus project researches the modernist programme of layeredness and transparency using a series of 'test-cubes'. The outcome is a design for an arts academy in the immediate vicinity of Gropius's Bauhaus. The margin or the space-between is a key motif.

House H. has the programme of a villa. Standing in the Flevopolder, it responds to the artificial quality of field and perspective to be found there. The dialectic between the villa's autonomy and its contextuality is concretized in a symbolic house of mirrors. At the same time, the anti-Arcadian quality of the surroundings is reflected in the formal programme of two architectural designs. In both variants a court and an interstitial space are used to fold in a second interface within the basic outer layer of the house.

Aedicula brings together a trio of motifs: fractal, that describes a complicated repetition in itself; aedicula, the house-in-a-house motif; and space-between, the marginal space between ordered domains. For the intertwinement of public and private realms described here, the following serve as references: the Islamic bathhouse, the houses of Adolf Loos, Dan Graham's pavilions and Baroque architecture.

200 houses are part of an urban plan for a triangular plot in Eindhoven. A stringent deployment of such urban commonplaces as square, court, street and block is to give the public space a formal mask. The element of freedom is sought in designing the space-between, such as the entry zone which like a pore in the street's skin is crowned with an internally clad lantern. The exceptional aspect of this space is continued in the uppermost storey, the attic. Discrete boxes that presence in the façade on one side as window openings distinct from the prevailing order, are an extra attraction for the dwellings below.
