Underground AMF - Eric van der Woerdt

Underground AMF

The project is set in the urban area beyond Amersfoort railway station, an area shot through by a ten-track railway line. The present task consists of easing the railway into the urban fabric and lessening its barrier effect, so that the area beyond can become part of the city centre. In urbanistic terms the essence of the scheme is to bring an urban continuity to bear. This is done by playing a game at street level, and by designing an underground centre with streets, bridges, a square, two parks and sundry buildings. The subterranean portion of the proposal accommodates various functions on the theme of modern media, such as a complex for the local broadcasting company, cinema and theatre auditoria and a media centre. Above ground, there is housing, two shopping promenades, one along each park, and the city hotel. The design of the complex aspires to an expressive architecture that coheres with the construction so as to bring into view the immense forces at work. The heart of the scheme is discovered below the railway viaduct. From an opened-up space, the various components of the complex can be viewed, and accessed, to a depth of five floors below street level.
