Set centrally in the Hague suburb of Rijswijk is the lacklustre
shopping mall 'In De Bogaard'. Like the surrounding housing districts,
the centre is monofunctional. After closing time there is little
there in the way of action.
The potential of the site justifies that the shopping mall be
radically recast. With the advent of the new ring road round The
Hague and the development of various Vinex housing sites in the
region, In De Bogaard will move to a more pivotal position in
the agglomeration that is The Hague. S.O.S. capitalizes on the
forthcoming context.
This design integrates houses and facilities for leisure and sports
in a shopping mall, doubling the present development density in
the process.
The scheme's main statement is an oblique surface that rises from
the access road (Beatrixlaan) to Steenvoordelaan at the other
side of In De Bogaard. Cars parked on this surface articulate
the shopping mall tucked beneath it. The upward-thrusting asphalt
plane presents a dynamic stage whose attractiveness derives from
the welter of activities it can support.
Occupying centre stage in the revamped In De Bogaard is a major
sports complex. Spread across the area are various housing blocks
which together with the appositely positioned leisure-time facilities
encourage informal activity at ground level when the shops are
closed.
Rather than a portentious mass to articulate the centre, this
role is entrusted to an element typical of a suburb such as Rijswijk:
