Lelyland - Tom Mossel

Here the built component of Lelystad has been thinned out and the publicspace redivided into lots with the aim of creating a city that really isgreen. The results of capitalizing on the mass exodus of the populationinstead of fighting it, include a 'sun city' for the elderly, an oasis forsecond home-owners, a dream for the home-based worker, a plot of land forthe eco-farmer with a local market - a land, that is, of landed property:Lelyland.

The strategy has been developed further in a quintet of model districts.

  • In the orchard district the sand has been dug away down to fertile soil to receive the fruit trees. The houses are set on the original level one metre higher and look out over the orchard.
  • In the glasshouse district the ground level is packed with glasshouses and frames with the houses set adjacent to them.
  • The farmsteads consist of terrace housing linked so as to generate larger units serving as residential collectives, a holiday court and so on.
  • In the drive district the space is distributed into gardens surrounded by hedges. Each garden doubles as the drive to a house.
  • The rough-up district, finally, offers life in a burgeoning nature park.

The houses made available by the departing population can be commandeeredby those staying put to aggrandize their dwelling space in any number ofways.
