Metro Eurotéléport, autrefois Roubaix - Leo van Beek

The challenge inherent in designing the underground railway line from Euralille to Eurotéléport, at present Roubaix, is in injecting new life into the city without having to resort to fashionable facades or sculptures. This scheme focuses as much on the stations, places where the metro impinges upon the city, as on the experience of travelling underground. It endeavours to transmute the unpleasant shut-in feeling typical of underground spaces into a sense of spaciousness. Illuminated images in the metro tunnel combine through the speed of the train into a form of animated cartoon for the passenger. When the train stops the images give way to announcements and framed views of activity on the platform. They reappear in the escalator tube until it disgorges its contents in another part of town.
