The Ark of Reason - Jan Veldscholte

An island in the Wadden Sea
for the Club of Rome
to reflect in silence
on the future of the earth

The design for this place of reflection sprang from the urge to bypass the everyday and push back boundaries. This was done by standing back from the task and allowing feelings to join the theoretical aspects during the design process. The goal of this approach is to abrogate the apparent oppositions between art and technology, nature and culture by expressing these themes in the design without one counteracting or neutralizing the other.

The reason for choosing the island site in the Wadden Sea was because this environment had already proved to be a propitious climate for contemplation and reflection.

Commitment to the environment generated an architecture that adds to the natural site rather than eradicating it.

In this case the intervention even ensures the island's continued existence. The building itself stands an obvious monument to humanity, nature and technology - to man as earthchild.
