The design sites the new Central Public Library in Amsterdam on the Rokin boulevard surrounded by other major public amenities. The building while modelled on its setting defies the building line and the urban context along with it.
The book stack is the nub of the design. Containing all the books, this ten-storey high, solid concrete volume organizes the library spaces around it - private rooms to the north, main public space to the south. This last combines quiet, secluded nooks with places that send out feelers to the city. The head of the building is the most representative part of the library, drawing attention to it as a public urban facility.
